About This Game:
198X is a narrative game built as a tribute to the arcade era of the 1980s. It follows a teenager known as the Kid, whose discovery of a local arcade becomes an escape from everyday life and a doorway into several different game worlds.

Instead of using one gameplay system from beginning to end, the story moves through fictional arcade games inspired by recognizable genres from the period.

How the Gameplay Works
Each section introduces a different style of play. Players encounter side-scrolling beat-’em-up combat, arcade racing, space shooting, ninja action, and a first-person RPG-inspired sequence.

These games are connected through scenes from the Kid’s life, allowing the arcade experiences to reflect the character’s emotions and personal changes. Progression is linear, with each genre serving as a chapter in the overall story.
