Warhammer: Shadow of the Horned Rat is a fantasy tactical strategy game set in the Warhammer world. Players lead a mercenary commander and a growing collection of military units through a campaign involving Skaven, Orcs, Goblins, and other threats gathering across the Old World.
Rather than constructing bases during battles, the game focuses on managing a persistent army between missions and deploying those troops into real-time tactical engagements. Units that survive can gain experience, making veteran regiments increasingly valuable as the campaign becomes more difficult.
How the Gameplay Works
Before battles, players choose available regiments and prepare forces according to the mission. During combat, infantry, cavalry, archers, artillery, and magical units are moved around the battlefield in formations. Facing, terrain, morale, and positioning all influence how effectively troops perform.
Money earned from completed contracts is used to hire or maintain units and replace losses. Because casualties can carry over into later missions, sacrificing experienced troops unnecessarily can make future battles harder. Wizards and special characters provide additional abilities that can change difficult engagements.
