Army Men 2 is a top-down action game that continues the plastic-soldier conflict between the Green and Tan armies. Players once again take control of Sarge as he leads Green forces through a series of missions across toy-sized battlefields, household environments, and outdoor locations. The game keeps the playful idea of miniature soldiers fighting with real military equipment while expanding the campaign with new enemies, weapons, vehicles, and mission objectives.

The sequel places greater emphasis on varied environments and larger combat encounters, with battles taking place across areas filled with everyday objects that appear enormous from the perspective of the plastic soldiers. Players fight infantry, destroy enemy positions, rescue allies, and complete objectives while dealing with hazards such as fire, explosives, and heavily armed enemy units. The mixture of arcade-style shooting and light tactical elements gives missions a fast but strategic feel.

How the Gameplay Works
Players control Sarge from an overhead perspective and move freely around each battlefield while using firearms, grenades, explosives, and other weapons against Tan soldiers. Missions usually involve objectives such as eliminating enemies, rescuing friendly troops, destroying targets, escorting units, or reaching specific locations. Weapons can be collected during missions, allowing players to switch between different tools depending on the enemies and situation.

Vehicles and mounted weapons appear in several missions, giving players additional firepower against larger groups and fortified positions. Environmental objects can also influence combat, with certain areas offering cover while explosives and fire can quickly destroy both enemies and plastic soldiers. Progression is mission-based, and later stages introduce stronger opposition, more complicated objectives, and larger battle areas that require careful movement and weapon use.
