About This Game:
Close Combat: Wacht am Rhein recreates the winter fighting of the Battle of the Bulge, placing players in command of either German or American forces during the final major German offensive in Western Europe. The German campaign attempts to break through Allied positions, while the American side must stop the offensive and regain lost territory around locations such as Bastogne.
The game combines the traditional Close Combat top-down battlefield system with a larger campaign map covering the wider operation. Dozens of historically inspired scenarios allow players to experience the battle from both sides, while changing supply conditions, support availability, and battlefield losses influence how the campaign develops.
How the Gameplay Works
Individual battles take place in pausable real time as players command infantry teams, support weapons, vehicles, and tanks across detailed tactical maps. Soldiers are affected by morale and psychological pressure, meaning units under heavy fire may become pinned, frightened, or less capable of following orders.
The Grand Campaign adds a strategic layer where battlegroups move between connected areas and fight for control of important positions. Artillery, air strikes, supplies, retreat routes, and the condition of available forces can affect later engagements. Players can also create alternative engagements with the included scenario editor.
