Darkest Dungeon II is a turn-based roguelike RPG about a group of damaged heroes traveling by stagecoach through a collapsing world. Each expedition is a self-contained journey toward a mountain where the party must confront increasingly dangerous manifestations of ruin.
The sequel retains stressful tactical combat but replaces the first game’s town management with route planning, relationships, stagecoach travel, and long-term unlocks between expeditions.
How the Gameplay Works
Four heroes fight in rank-based turn-based battles where position determines which skills can be used. Stress, status effects, tokens, death resistance, and enemy combinations require careful planning rather than relying only on direct damage.
During travel, players choose routes between locations, visit inns, equip trinkets, improve skills, and manage relationships between party members. Successful and failed expeditions both contribute to long-term progression that unlocks additional heroes, items, and options.
