Imperator: Rome is a grand strategy game covering the ancient Mediterranean and surrounding regions during the centuries following Alexander the Great. Players can lead major powers such as Rome and Carthage or choose from hundreds of smaller tribes, kingdoms, and republics spread across the map.
Running a state involves far more than commanding armies. Population groups, culture, religion, governors, characters, trade, diplomacy, internal politics, technology, and provincial loyalty all contribute to whether an expanding empire remains stable.
How the Gameplay Works
Time progresses continuously but can be paused whenever the player needs to issue orders. Armies and fleets move across provinces while diplomatic actions form alliances, declare wars, negotiate peace, and manipulate relationships with neighboring states.
Territories contain populations with different cultures, religions, and social classes that provide resources and manpower. Conquest can therefore create internal problems if newly acquired populations remain unhappy. Government type, laws, offices, trade routes, and character loyalty must be managed alongside military expansion.
