Painkiller: Overdose is a standalone entry in the supernatural first-person shooter series that explores the consequences of Daniel Garner’s earlier battle against Lucifer. This time the story centers on Belial, a powerful character trapped between angelic and demonic forces who becomes involved in another violent journey through Hell, Purgatory, and other twisted realms.
The game preserves the aggressive arena-style combat of earlier Painkiller releases while introducing a different protagonist, new monsters, a new collection of demonic weapons, and sixteen additional campaign levels. Its locations continue the series’ habit of moving between wildly different settings rather than maintaining one continuous environment.
How the Gameplay Works
Players move rapidly through levels while eliminating large groups of enemies before advancing to the next area. Six new demonic weapons provide several methods of crowd control, while more than forty monster types create encounters where choosing the correct weapon and staying mobile are important.
Tarot cards return and can provide Belial with additional abilities and combinations when their requirements are met. Levels contain hidden areas, health, ammunition, and large boss fights, while multiplayer maintains compatibility with maps and modes associated with the original Painkiller multiplayer experience.
