Painkiller: Black Edition is a fast horror-themed first-person shooter that combines the original Painkiller with its Battle Out of Hell expansion. The story follows Daniel Garner, who dies alongside his wife in a car accident but becomes trapped in Purgatory instead of reaching Heaven. He is eventually drawn into a war involving demonic armies and powerful supernatural forces.
The game is built around relentless battles against large groups of monsters rather than slow tactical firefights. Gothic cemeteries, castles, ruined cities, monasteries, battlefields, and other strange environments serve as arenas where Daniel must destroy waves of enemies before being allowed to continue.
How the Gameplay Works
Players move quickly through first-person levels using weapons that often provide two different attack functions. The arsenal includes conventional firearms alongside unusual tools such as the Painkiller weapon, stake launcher, and other equipment designed to eliminate groups of monsters in dramatic ways.
Many combat areas temporarily lock until every enemy has been defeated, making movement and crowd control important. Defeated creatures can leave souls that restore health, while optional level conditions unlock Tarot cards capable of providing special bonuses. Black Edition also adds the ten single-player levels from Battle Out of Hell.
