Pentiment is a narrative adventure set in sixteenth-century Bavaria, where artist Andreas Maler becomes involved in a murder investigation inside a small town and nearby abbey. The story unfolds across many years and focuses on religion, class, politics, personal belief, and the consequences of accusation.
The game is presented like an illuminated manuscript brought to life. Dialogue, typography, art style, and character animation are all designed to evoke manuscripts, woodcuts, and early printed books from the period.
How the Gameplay Works
Players explore the town, speak with residents, investigate scenes, and decide which leads deserve the limited time available each day. Andreas’s chosen background affects what he knows and which dialogue options become available.
There is no conventional combat. Progress comes from interviewing suspects, discovering secrets, and deciding what evidence to trust. The player eventually has to make accusations without ever receiving perfect certainty, and those decisions change the community for years afterward. Later chapters revisit the same families and locations, showing how earlier choices reshaped lives.
