Sonic Heroes is a 3D action platformer that builds its adventure around teams of three characters rather than controlling Sonic alone. Four different teams are available, each containing a Speed, Fly, and Power character. Team Sonic brings together Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles, while the other groups follow their own stories and provide different difficulty levels, objectives, and character combinations.
Stages move through colorful environments filled with loops, rails, enemies, platforms, rings, and alternate routes. The ability to switch between all three team members at almost any time is central to the design, as different obstacles are easier to overcome by using the correct formation.
How the Gameplay Works
Speed characters are useful for rapid movement and high-speed sections, Fly characters can carry teammates through the air for a limited time, and Power characters break heavy obstacles and deal stronger attacks. Players can instantly change the team’s leader, causing the other two characters to follow in a formation suited to that character type.
Defeating enemies and collecting power-up items can increase the level of each character type during a stage. Rings protect the team from damage, while checkpoints preserve progress through longer levels. Building the Team Blast gauge allows all three characters to perform a powerful combined attack. Each team’s campaign uses many of the same environments but changes objectives and difficulty to match its characters.
