Streets of Rage 4 continues the classic side-scrolling beat-’em-up series years after the defeat of Mr. X. Wood Oak City is once again being manipulated by a criminal organization, bringing Axel Stone and Blaze Fielding back into action alongside new fighters Cherry Hunter and Floyd Iraia.
Hand-drawn animation replaces the original pixel-art presentation while maintaining the series’ focus on street fighting, cooperative play, weapon pickups, environmental hazards, and electronic music. Returning characters and unlockable retro versions of fighters connect the new entry directly with the earlier games.
How the Gameplay Works
Players move across 2D stages and fight groups of enemies using normal attacks, throws, jumping strikes, Blitz moves, defensive specials, and powerful Star Moves. Enemies can be knocked into one another or bounced from walls to continue longer combinations.
Special attacks consume recoverable health rather than a separate meter, encouraging aggressive players to regain the lost health by landing attacks without taking damage. Weapons found in stages can be picked up, thrown, and even caught when they rebound. Story, Arcade, Stage Select, Boss Rush, and competitive modes provide multiple ways to play.
