This Is the Police is a story-focused management game set in Freeburg, a city struggling with crime, corruption, political pressure, and organized criminal activity. Players take control of Police Chief Jack Boyd, who has been told that his career is coming to an end. With retirement approaching, Boyd sets himself a dangerous financial goal while continuing to run the city’s police department.
Rather than presenting the police force as a simple collection of units, the game constantly puts personal and professional problems in front of the player. Officers can become unavailable, politicians may demand favors, criminal groups can create additional pressure, and seemingly straightforward choices can develop into much larger problems.
How the Gameplay Works
Each working day brings new calls from around Freeburg. Players decide which police officers should respond and must judge how much manpower an incident actually requires. Sending too few officers can result in failure, while sending too many can leave the department unable to deal with another emergency that appears later.
Detectives can be assigned to investigations where evidence must be collected and arranged to reconstruct crimes. At the same time, the player manages staff, deals with city officials, responds to unexpected situations, and makes story decisions that influence Jack Boyd’s future. The campaign takes place across the final 180 days of his career, during which he attempts to accumulate $500,000 before retirement.
