About This Game:
A Light in the Dark is a visual novel about Hao-Chen Jiang, a wealthy student who awakens tied up inside an unfamiliar room and discovers that he has been kidnapped for ransom. His captor initially appears interested only in money, but the days that follow gradually reveal the very different lives and circumstances surrounding both characters.
The story explores inequality, prejudice, desperation, and the assumptions people make about lives they have never experienced. Player choices influence Hao-Chen’s behavior during captivity and can lead the story toward several different conclusions.
How the Gameplay Works
Most scenes progress through dialogue and narrative choices, but interactive sections allow Hao-Chen to examine objects around the room and search for possible ways to escape. Actions consume stamina, preventing the player from investigating everything without considering priorities.
Information gathered while examining the room can open additional decisions and change later events. Multiple endings encourage replaying the story with different choices and approaches to the relationship between Hao-Chen and his captor.
