Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines is a World War II real-time tactics game that puts players in control of a small team of highly trained Allied commandos operating deep inside enemy territory. Instead of commanding large armies, each mission revolves around a handful of specialists who must infiltrate German-controlled areas, sabotage important targets, rescue prisoners, gather intelligence, and escape before enemy forces can overwhelm them.

Every commando has a different set of abilities, making teamwork essential throughout the campaign. The Green Beret handles close combat and heavy lifting, the Sniper can eliminate distant guards, the Spy can disguise himself as an enemy officer, while other members specialize in explosives, vehicles, diving, and traps. Missions take place across military bases, bridges, ports, snowy regions, and fortified installations where careful observation is usually more effective than direct combat.

How the Gameplay Works
Players view each mission from an isometric perspective and issue individual commands to members of the squad. Enemy soldiers follow patrol routes and react to suspicious activity, so players need to study their movements before making a move. Guards have visible fields of view, helping players identify safe routes, distracting opportunities, and the right moment to cross open areas or silently eliminate a target.

Different objectives require specific commandos and equipment. The Sapper can plant explosives and use grenades, the Marine can swim and operate boats, the Driver can control vehicles and mounted weapons, and the Spy can move through guarded areas while disguised. Many missions allow several approaches, but alarms or careless attacks can quickly bring additional enemies into the area, making patience, timing, and coordination important for completing objectives successfully.
