Dark Chess is a strategy and puzzle game that takes familiar chess rules and adds fog of war, preventing players from seeing the entire enemy army. Standard opening memorization becomes much less reliable when opposing pieces can remain hidden until they move into visible areas, turning each match into a mixture of chess tactics, deduction, scouting, and calculated risk.
Its single-player campaign moves beyond ordinary chess matches by introducing historical kings and queens as unusual opponents. These encounters can use altered boards, traps, special abilities, and deliberately unfair rules, requiring players to adapt rather than rely entirely on traditional chess knowledge.
How the Gameplay Works
Pieces generally retain recognizable chess movement, but hidden information changes how those movements are evaluated. Players need to infer where enemy pieces may be positioned and decide whether advancing into an unseen area is worth the risk. Capturing the opposing royal piece can require stealth and prediction as much as conventional board control.
Campaign stages introduce puzzle-like objectives and opponents that can break normal expectations through unusual abilities. Completing difficult challenges provides rewards and customization options. The game also supports competitive play, allowing the fog-of-war concept to be used against another human player.
