About This Game:
Detention is a 2D atmospheric horror adventure set in 1960s Taiwan during a period of martial law. The story begins at an isolated school where two students find themselves trapped after conditions around the building become increasingly unnatural. What starts as an attempt to escape gradually becomes a disturbing journey through memories, guilt, fear, and events connected to Taiwan’s history.
The game blends political and historical themes with supernatural imagery drawn from Taiwanese and Chinese culture and mythology. Familiar school environments transform into unsettling locations where symbolic objects and disturbing creatures reveal pieces of the characters’ past.
How the Gameplay Works
Players explore side-scrolling rooms, collect items, examine documents, and solve environmental puzzles. Objects discovered in one part of the school may need to be used elsewhere, encouraging careful investigation of classrooms, corridors, and hidden areas.
Hostile supernatural entities cannot usually be defeated through ordinary combat, so players must understand how to avoid them safely. The game relies heavily on atmosphere, environmental storytelling, and puzzle solving rather than constant action.
