Faith in Despair is a grimdark roguelike deckbuilder built around an unusual card-creation system. Instead of only collecting finished cards, players obtain triggers, actions, and modifiers that can be combined to define what their own creatures and spells actually do.
The protagonist’s struggle against Death is complicated by despair itself. Powerful spells and summoned creatures can push the player deeper toward despair, creating curses and consequences that make an apparently strong deck increasingly dangerous to use.
How the Gameplay Works
During a run, players construct cards by combining a trigger with an action and suitable modifiers. This creates a large number of possible effects, allowing decks to be shaped around specialized synergies rather than relying entirely on predefined cards.
Casting spells and raising creatures helps defeat enemies but can increase despair. Players therefore need to balance immediate strength against the long-term risks of accumulating curses. Following Faith’s journal and advancing through runs also unlocks additional starting decks.
