The King of Fighters ’97 is a 2D fighting game that continues SNK’s long-running team-based tournament series and brings the Orochi storyline to its conclusion. The roster includes returning fighters such as Kyo Kusanagi, Iori Yagami, Terry Bogard, Mai Shiranui, Ryo Sakazaki, and Athena Asamiya, along with several characters connected to the growing Orochi conflict. Players choose teams of three fighters and battle through a series of opponents before reaching the final stages of the tournament.
The game keeps the fast pace and combo-heavy style of earlier entries while introducing two different fighting systems that change how characters build meter and use special abilities. How the Gameplay Works
Matches are fought in two dimensions, with each player selecting three characters before battle. Advanced Mode allows players to run forward, roll past attacks, and build power through offensive actions, while Extra Mode uses a more traditional charging system and different movement options. Power gauges can be used to perform stronger Super Special Moves, giving players additional ways to finish rounds or turn difficult fights around. Team order also matters, since surviving characters can carry momentum into the next round while later fighters may have to recover from an early disadvantage.
