METAL GEAR & METAL GEAR 2: Solid Snake are the original top-down stealth games that established many ideas later expanded by the Metal Gear Solid series. Players control Solid Snake as he infiltrates heavily guarded military facilities, avoids detection, gathers equipment, and destroys dangerous Metal Gear weapons.
The games are built around stealth before direct combat. Guards have vision patterns, alarms can call reinforcements, and finding alternate routes or disguises is often safer than fighting every soldier.
How the Gameplay Works
Players move through rooms and corridors, crawl or hide where possible, use suppressed weapons, collect key cards, rescue prisoners, and learn information through radio contacts. Equipment gradually opens new paths and solutions.
Boss fights and larger objectives punctuate the infiltration, while Metal Gear 2 expands enemy awareness, sound, radar behavior, and puzzle complexity. Together, the games show the series’ early evolution from simple stealth action into a more detailed tactical espionage structure. As more of the game opens up, classic top-down stealth remains central but gains extra depth from solid snake protagonist and guard vision and alarm systems.
