Metal Slug is a 2D run-and-gun action game that begins the long-running arcade series with a fast campaign filled with soldiers, armored vehicles, explosions, and oversized military machines. Players take control of Marco Rossi or Tarma Roving and fight through enemy territory in an effort to stop General Morden and his Rebel Army. The adventure moves across battlefields, towns, military installations, and other war-torn locations, with each stage introducing new enemies and increasingly destructive encounters.
The game is known for its detailed pixel animation, exaggerated action, and constant mixture of infantry combat and vehicle sections. Players can rescue prisoners, collect stronger weapons, destroy enemy equipment, and occasionally take control of the powerful Metal Slug tank. The original campaign contains six missions, each ending with a major confrontation against heavily armed enemy forces or large mechanical bosses.
How the Gameplay Works
Players move from left to right through side-scrolling stages while running, jumping, shooting, throwing grenades, and avoiding enemy attacks. The standard weapon has unlimited ammunition, while stronger weapons collected during missions provide additional firepower for a limited number of shots. Enemies attack from the ground, elevated positions, vehicles, and fortified areas, requiring players to keep moving while reacting quickly to incoming fire.
Prisoners found throughout stages can be rescued and may reward the player with weapons, ammunition, grenades, or score bonuses. Some sections allow players to enter the Metal Slug tank, which provides heavier weapons and additional protection until it is destroyed or abandoned. The campaign can also be played cooperatively, allowing two players to fight through missions together while sharing the same battlefield and dealing with increasingly large groups of enemies.
