Orwell is a narrative investigation game built around surveillance, privacy, and the consequences of sharing personal information. Players work as an outside investigator for a government security program known as Orwell, a powerful system capable of gathering information from websites, social media profiles, private conversations, emails, and other digital sources. After a terrorist attack creates fear across the fictional country of The Nation, your job is to identify people who may be connected to the incident.
Instead of exploring physical locations or fighting enemies, the story develops through the information you uncover. Every piece of data can change how authorities view a person, and seemingly harmless details may become extremely important when placed beside other evidence. Because you decide which information gets uploaded into the system, your interpretation of events can influence the investigation and the lives of the people being monitored.
How the Gameplay Works
Gameplay revolves around searching digital documents and communications for highlighted pieces of information called datachunks. These can contain names, relationships, locations, opinions, employment details, or statements connected to the investigation. Players choose which datachunks should be uploaded to Orwell, while contradictory information must often be examined carefully before deciding which version appears more reliable.
New discoveries unlock additional websites, profiles, conversations, and suspects, gradually creating a larger network of connected information. Some decisions have immediate consequences, while others may affect events later in the story. Progress depends more on careful reading and judgment than traditional puzzle solving, making the player’s interpretation of evidence one of the most important parts of the experience.
