Serious Sam: The First Encounter introduces Sam Stone’s battle against the forces of Mental in a fast arcade-style first-person shooter set largely around ancient Egypt. The world combines historical ruins and temples with science-fiction technology, monsters, alien creatures, and enormous combat arenas.
Rather than hiding enemies behind every corner, the game frequently places Sam in large open spaces and sends entire groups directly toward him. The result is a shooter built around speed, awareness, weapon selection, and surviving increasingly ridiculous numbers of attackers.
How the Gameplay Works
Players run through temples, desert areas, underground chambers, and massive outdoor arenas while collecting weapons and ammunition. Different enemies attack in different ways, including charging directly toward Sam, firing from long range, jumping through the air, or surrounding him in large groups.
Weapons range from basic firearms to shotguns, rocket launchers, a minigun, and heavier equipment capable of dealing with large crowds. Exploration is rewarded with hidden rooms, secret weapons, health, armor, and unusual encounters. Cooperative multiplayer allows several players to face the campaign’s enemy hordes together.
