SteamWorld Build is a city-building and mining management game set in the SteamWorld universe. Players develop a surface settlement while simultaneously digging an underground mine in search of ancient technology needed to escape a dying planet.
The two layers are closely connected. The town provides workers, resources, and infrastructure, while the mine supplies materials required for more advanced buildings and progression.
How the Gameplay Works
On the surface, players build homes, roads, factories, services, and production chains. Underground, miners dig tunnels, gather ore, construct supports, move resources, and defend against threats.
As both layers expand, increasingly complex goods and worker classes become necessary. The challenge comes from keeping the surface economy productive while ensuring the mine has enough support to reach deeper technological objectives. The progression becomes more engaging once city building, underground mining layer, and production chains begin to overlap. Early sections introduce them separately, but later challenges expect the player to combine those ideas more efficiently. worker classes adds another consideration that can change priorities, so learning how the systems support one another becomes more useful than repeating the same early strategy. The simple structure works because city building stays central while underground mining layer and production chains introduce just enough change to make later objectives more demanding without adding unnecessary complexity.
