About This Game:
1998: The Toll Keeper Story is a narrative simulation set in the fictional Southeast Asian nation of Janapa during a period of economic crisis and civil unrest. Players follow Dewi, a toll-booth worker attempting to preserve a fragile everyday life while expecting a child and watching conditions around her steadily deteriorate.
The toll booth places Dewi between ordinary travelers, government rules, suspicious documents, and people with their own desperate circumstances. Decisions that seem small during one shift can contribute to much larger consequences for Dewi and the people she encounters.
How the Gameplay Works
Vehicles arrive at the booth and players inspect information before deciding whether each traveler should be allowed through. Documents, regulations, and changing circumstances require attention, while personal judgment sometimes conflicts with the safest decision for Dewi herself.
Choices influence the direction of the narrative and can lead toward different outcomes. Maintaining employment and surviving the wider crisis are important, but helping or rejecting the people passing through the checkpoint creates many of the story’s most difficult decisions.
