About This Game:
Sunless Sea is a Gothic exploration RPG set in the Fallen London universe, where Victorian London has been carried underground beside a vast subterranean ocean known as the Unterzee. Players become the captain of a steamship and leave port in search of wealth, discoveries, strange stories, and whatever personal ambition they selected at the beginning of their voyage.
The Unterzee is filled with isolated ports, bizarre civilizations, dangerous creatures, hostile vessels, and events where a captain’s decisions can produce unexpected consequences. Every expedition carries the risk of running out of food or fuel long before reaching the safety of London.
How the Gameplay Works
Players steer a steamship across a dark overhead map while managing fuel, supplies, crew, hull condition, and Terror. Exploring with the ship’s light helps reveal nearby dangers but consumes additional resources, creating a constant tradeoff between safety and efficiency.
Ports contain extensive narrative events, trade opportunities, officers, missions, and important decisions. Combat against monsters and enemy ships happens in real time, while death can end a captain’s career and allow parts of their progress to be passed to a successor.
