What Remains of Edith Finch is a narrative exploration game about Edith Finch returning to her abandoned family home in Washington State. As the last surviving member of the Finch family, she searches through sealed bedrooms and personal belongings to understand the unusual deaths that have affected generations of her relatives.
Each family member’s story is presented as a self-contained interactive sequence with its own visual style and gameplay idea. The game constantly changes perspective and mechanics to match the memory being told rather than relying on a single repeated system.
How the Gameplay Works
Players explore the Finch house in first person, following hidden passages, reading notes, and examining rooms preserved after their occupants died. Discovering a particular object begins a playable memory centered on one member of the family.
These sequences range from simple exploration to highly unusual interactive scenes with completely different controls and presentation. There is little traditional challenge; progress comes from moving through the environment and participating in the stories until Edith reconstructs more of her family’s history.
