Anno 1503 A.D. is a historical city-building and economic strategy game about establishing colonies across a collection of unexplored islands. Players begin with ships, settlers, and limited supplies before gradually transforming small coastal settlements into large communities supported by farms, mines, workshops, markets, and complex production chains.
Economic growth is closely connected to the needs of the population. As residents advance into higher social levels, they expect additional food, clothing, luxury goods, services, and other products. Supplying these demands allows the colony to develop while opening more buildings and possibilities.
How the Gameplay Works
Players choose islands to settle and construct warehouses that become the center of local trade and production. Raw materials are turned into finished goods through connected industries, while ships transport products between colonies when one island cannot provide everything the population requires.
Expansion eventually introduces diplomacy, trade, and military conflict with other powers. Soldiers and ships can protect valuable territory or attack competing settlements, but supporting a large military requires a strong economy first. Scenario and sandbox-style gameplay provide different objectives and starting conditions.
