Anno 1602 A.D. is a colony-building strategy game set during the age of exploration. Players sail into an island-filled world and establish settlements that can grow from small pioneer communities into wealthy cities supported by trade, farming, manufacturing, and overseas expansion.
The economy is built around satisfying the needs of the population. Settlers require food and basic supplies before they can advance into wealthier social classes that demand more sophisticated products. Reaching these higher levels unlocks new buildings and allows the settlement to continue expanding.
How the Gameplay Works
Players send ships between islands, build warehouses near useful resources, and create production chains that transform raw materials into finished goods. Because different islands support different resources, successful colonies often depend on transporting cargo across sea routes rather than trying to produce everything in one location.
Computer-controlled rivals can settle competing islands and interact through trade, diplomacy, or warfare. Naval ships can protect trade routes, while military units provide a way to defend or capture territory. Scenarios provide specific goals, while open-ended play allows players to concentrate on building a successful economy at their own pace.
