APE OUT is a top-down action game about an ape violently escaping from captivity. Its minimalist visual style uses bold shapes and silhouettes, while a reactive jazz soundtrack changes according to the movement, impacts, and chaos taking place on screen.
The game strips combat down to a few physical actions. The ape has no conventional weapon inventory and instead relies on speed, powerful shoves, grabs, human shields, and environmental positioning to break through groups of armed guards.
How the Gameplay Works
Players sprint through maze-like environments while guards attempt to shoot the escaping ape. Enemies can be knocked into walls or one another, while grabbed guards can temporarily be held in front of the ape and may fire their weapons during the struggle.
Levels contain partially randomized layouts, preventing every run from becoming pure memorization. The soundtrack dynamically adds percussion and musical accents to crashes, attacks, gunfire, and deaths, making the audio closely follow the player’s actions.
