About This Game:
BELOW is a dark action-adventure roguelike centered on exploring a mysterious underground world beneath a remote island. Its cavernous environments are deliberately dangerous and often leave the player with limited information about what lies ahead. The atmosphere emphasizes isolation, discovery, and the feeling of descending somewhere that was never meant to be understood easily.
Survival requires more than defeating enemies. Light, health, hunger, thirst, equipment, and available supplies all matter during a descent. Death carries serious consequences, while knowledge gained from previous attempts helps players understand traps, shortcuts, enemy behavior, and the structure of the underground environment.
How the Gameplay Works
Players explore interconnected areas from a distant top-down perspective, using melee weapons, ranged equipment, shields, traps, and carefully managed supplies. Enemies can deal severe damage, so avoiding attacks and deciding when to fight are often more important than aggressively clearing every room. A lantern provides light and also interacts with important elements of the world.
The deeper the player travels, the more dangerous and cryptic the journey becomes. Resources can be gathered and crafted into useful supplies, while hidden passages and environmental clues reward careful exploration. After death, returning to the previous character’s remains can help recover lost equipment, making each new expedition partly a rescue attempt as well as another push downward.
