Chicken Invaders is a fast-paced arcade shooter that begins the long-running series with an invasion of Earth by chickens from another galaxy. The attacking chickens have arrived seeking revenge for humanity’s treatment of their Earthbound relatives, leaving the player to defend the planet from wave after wave of poultry attackers. Inspired by classic fixed-screen shooters, the game keeps its focus on simple movement, constant firing, and surviving increasingly difficult enemy formations.
The original game is designed for quick arcade-style sessions, with each wave introducing another formation of chickens that must be cleared before progressing. Weapon power-ups strengthen the player’s main gun through multiple levels, while missiles provide a powerful way to clear dangerous situations. Boss encounters appear during progression, and high-score tracking encourages players to return and improve their performance.
How the Gameplay Works
Players control a small spacecraft near the bottom of the screen and move horizontally while firing upward at formations of invading chickens. Enemies move across the play area and attack the player’s position, requiring constant movement while trying to eliminate every chicken in the current wave. Once a formation has been defeated, the game moves on to another wave with increasingly challenging patterns and threats.
Weapon power-ups collected during play increase the strength of the main weapon, which can be improved through eight power levels in the original game. Missiles can also be collected and used as powerful special attacks when the screen becomes crowded with enemies. Certain stages introduce boss encounters that require more sustained firepower, while one or two players can take part in the action together.
