Close Combat: Cross of Iron is a real-time tactical wargame focused on the Eastern Front of World War II. Players begin as a junior officer and command small groups of soldiers through battles fought across changing seasons and difficult terrain, with the campaign covering combat between German and Soviet forces.
Rather than filling the screen with hundreds of disposable units, the game concentrates on individual squads, vehicles, weapons, and soldiers. The behavior of troops is affected by battlefield conditions, making morale, suppression, leadership, and survival important parts of commanding effectively.
How the Gameplay Works
Battles unfold in real time from a top-down perspective. Players issue movement, attack, defensive, and positioning orders to infantry teams and vehicles while attempting to use terrain and available cover effectively. Units can become pinned or less effective under heavy enemy fire, so simply ordering everyone directly toward an objective can quickly produce serious losses.
Surviving troops continue through the larger campaign, giving additional importance to keeping experienced units alive. As the player advances, battles take place through frozen winter conditions, dry summer landscapes, and muddy autumn environments while the officer’s career develops through continued combat.
