Wing Commander 3: Heart of the Tiger combines a large live-action science-fiction story with first-person starfighter combat during the later stages of humanity’s war with the Kilrathi Empire. Players take the role of Colonel Christopher Blair, portrayed by Mark Hamill, as he joins the TCS Victory and participates in a crucial military campaign.
Much of the story unfolds through full-motion-video sequences featuring a cast that also includes Malcolm McDowell, John Rhys-Davies, and Tom Wilson. Characters can react to Blair differently depending on conversations and events, while losses during combat can also affect which pilots remain available later.
How the Gameplay Works
Between missions, players explore sections of the carrier through interactive story scenes, speak with crew members, attend briefings, and prepare for upcoming operations. Depending on the mission, Blair can choose an available fighter, configure its missile loadout, and select a wingman to accompany him.
Combat takes place from inside the spacecraft as players maneuver through space, target enemy fighters and capital ships, manage weapons, and work toward individual mission goals. Successful and failed missions can influence how the campaign unfolds, creating a more flexible progression than a completely fixed sequence of levels.
