Close Combat: Modern Tactics moves the series away from its familiar World War II setting and into hypothetical modern military engagements. Built from technology connected to a United States Marine Corps training simulation, the game focuses on small-unit combat involving modern American forces and various opposing units.
Battles take place across hand-drawn tactical maps inspired by several environments, ranging from rural American terrain to locations resembling Iraq and former Soviet republics. The game retains the Close Combat emphasis on individual soldiers and realistic battlefield reactions rather than treating infantry as anonymous units.
How the Gameplay Works
Players command squads and teams in pausable real-time combat, giving orders for movement, attacks, positioning, and other battlefield actions. Modern weapons and equipment increase engagement ranges and create different tactical considerations compared with the historical entries in the series.
Individual soldiers can react psychologically to the pressure of combat, making team management important when a unit comes under sustained fire.
