Democracy 3 is a political strategy and government simulation that puts players in charge of a modern democratic country. Taking the role of president or prime minister, players must deal with problems such as unemployment, crime, national debt, healthcare, education, taxation, pollution, and public services while trying to keep enough voters satisfied to remain in office. Every political decision can benefit some sections of society while upsetting others, making it difficult to create policies that please everyone.
The game models the population as individuals belonging to overlapping voter groups such as capitalists, socialists, conservatives, liberals, religious citizens, parents, motorists, and many others. Policies influence these groups differently and can also affect wider national statistics. Elections take place periodically, so players must balance long-term improvements with public approval while also dealing with unexpected events, political dilemmas, and problems that develop as a result of earlier decisions.
How the Gameplay Works
Players manage the country through an interconnected political interface where policies and national conditions influence one another. Existing policies can be increased, reduced, or cancelled, while new ones can be introduced in areas such as taxation, welfare, transport, law and order, the economy, public services, and foreign affairs. Making changes requires Political Capital, which is generated by cabinet ministers, preventing players from completely restructuring the country in a single turn.
Each turn represents a period of government and shows how earlier decisions affect voters, finances, and national statistics. Players must manage income and spending while watching issues such as debt, crime, unemployment, health, and environmental conditions. Dilemmas require direct decisions, while ongoing situations can appear when certain conditions become serious enough. Eventually an election determines whether the government remains in power, making voter approval and campaign promises important alongside economic and social management.
