Descent 3 continues the story of the Material Defender after the events of Descent II and once again combines spacecraft combat with completely unrestricted three-dimensional movement. A dangerous nanovirus has infected mining robots, leading to another conflict involving powerful corporations, hidden motives, and machines capable of using increasingly advanced tactics.
The package also includes the Mercenary expansion, which adds another campaign and additional missions to the main game. Descent 3 expands beyond enclosed mines with larger outdoor environments while still including tunnels, industrial facilities, and complex interior spaces.
How the Gameplay Works
Players pilot a combat ship with six degrees of freedom, allowing movement and rotation along every axis. Energy weapons, missiles, countermeasures, and other equipment are used against robots capable of long-range attacks, ambushes, and coordinated behavior.
Missions contain objectives beyond simply destroying reactors, including escorting, defending, retrieving important items, and eliminating specific targets. Outdoor areas provide more room for maneuvering than earlier games, while indoor stages retain the twisting layouts and attacks from every direction that define the series.
