About This Game:
Disco Elysium is a detective role-playing game set in the troubled district of Martinaise. Players awaken as an unnamed detective suffering from severe memory loss and must investigate a murder while simultaneously trying to reconstruct who they are, why they are there, and what happened before the investigation began.
Instead of relying on traditional fantasy combat, the game builds much of its role-playing around conversations, investigation, personality, political ideas, and an unusual collection of mental and physical skills. These skills regularly speak to the detective internally, offering advice, arguments, temptations, and conflicting interpretations of events.
How the Gameplay Works
Players explore Martinaise from an isometric perspective, interview witnesses, examine evidence, search locations, and decide which leads are worth pursuing. Dialogue choices and skill checks determine how many situations develop, while clothing and character attributes can change the detective’s chances of succeeding at specific actions.
Experience points can improve skills or open Thought Cabinet slots where ideas discovered during conversations can be internalized for new effects. Money, time, health, morale, equipment, and relationships also influence the investigation. The Final Cut version adds full voice acting and additional political vision quests to the complete experience.
