Dwarf Fortress is a deeply simulated colony management game in which players establish and oversee a settlement of dwarves inside a procedurally generated fantasy world. Each world comes with its own geography, civilizations, historical figures, wars, artifacts, creatures, and centuries of generated events before the fortress even begins.
A successful settlement requires much more than constructing rooms. Dwarves have individual skills, relationships, personalities, preferences, memories, and needs, while the surrounding world can introduce traders, migrants, invasions, forgotten beasts, accidents, and countless unexpected situations.
How the Gameplay Works
Players designate areas to mine, construct workshops and bedrooms, establish farms, create stockpiles, produce equipment, manage labor, and organize military squads. Dwarves then perform available tasks according to their assignments and skills.
Water, magma, geology, temperature, body damage, materials, creature anatomy, and many other systems are simulated in unusual detail. There is no traditional victory condition, so each fortress becomes its own emergent story until the settlement is abandoned or destroyed.
