About This Game:
Empires of the Undergrowth is a real-time strategy and colony management game that places players in control of an expanding ant colony. Much of the settlement is built underground, where workers excavate tunnels, create chambers, raise new ants, store resources, and protect the queen from creatures that enter the nest.
The world above ground provides food but also exposes the colony to rival ants, spiders, beetles, amphibians, and other predators. Different ant species have their own strengths, natural weapons, and battlefield roles, making colony composition an important part of preparing for each environment.
How the Gameplay Works
Players begin around the queen and order workers to dig through a hex-based underground environment. New chambers can be converted into nurseries and other useful areas, while collected food pays for additional workers and soldiers. Nest design matters because ants must move efficiently between the queen, brood chambers, food storage, and surface exits.
Above ground, ants are largely directed through pheromone markers rather than individually controlling every insect. Colonies gather food, attack competing nests, hunt other creatures, and defend valuable resources. The time of day and surrounding ecosystem can change which threats are active, forcing the player to decide when expanding is worth the risk.
