Factorio is a factory-building and automation game set on a vast alien world where the player begins with basic tools and gradually develops an enormous industrial network. Resources such as iron, copper, coal, stone, and oil are collected and processed into increasingly advanced materials, machines, and technology. What starts with manual mining and simple crafting eventually grows into production lines filled with drills, furnaces, assembling machines, conveyor belts, trains, robots, and electrical systems.
The main challenge comes from designing efficient production systems while continuously expanding the factory. Research unlocks better equipment and more advanced technologies, while pollution generated by industry can attract hostile native creatures that attack buildings and infrastructure. Players can strengthen defenses, improve logistics, redesign inefficient production lines, and eventually develop the technology required to launch a rocket, while the factory can continue operating and expanding afterward.
How the Gameplay Works
Players begin by gathering raw materials manually before constructing mining drills and furnaces that automate the first stages of production. Conveyor belts and inserters move resources between machines, allowing items to travel automatically from extraction through processing and assembly. As recipes become more complicated, factories require several interconnected production lines that provide components in the correct quantities without creating shortages or bottlenecks.
Researching technologies gradually unlocks trains, advanced power systems, oil processing, automated logistics, robots, stronger weapons, and other equipment. Railway networks can transport large quantities of resources between distant outposts, while logistic and construction robots can move items and assist with building or repairing structures. Defensive walls, turrets, ammunition, and military technology help protect industrial areas from enemy attacks. Factorio also supports multiplayer, custom maps, and extensive modding for players who want to build factories together or change the normal rules of the game.
