Forestrike is a martial-arts roguelite about Yu, a fighter traveling across the country to free the Emperor from the influence of a powerful Admiral. Yu is repeatedly outnumbered, and even a small mistake can end a run, but he possesses an unusual technique known as Foresight that allows battles to be practiced mentally before they happen for real.
The game treats fights almost like physical puzzles. Enemy placement, available objects, attack timing, and the order in which opponents are defeated can completely change the outcome. As Yu travels further, he meets five Masters who teach new martial arts techniques and permanently expand the ways future encounters can be approached.
How the Gameplay Works
Before entering a real fight, Foresight allows players to rehearse the encounter without suffering permanent consequences. Different moves and sequences can be tested until a workable strategy is discovered. The player then returns to reality and must execute that plan correctly, where taking damage and dying once again have genuine consequences.
Runs take place across randomly generated routes where players decide which encounters, Inns, and Masters to visit. Inns provide opportunities to recover, while Masters unlock techniques that can modify Yu’s move set. Long-term progression eventually encourages players to become skilled enough to defeat encounters without depending on Foresight at all.
