Hacknet is a terminal-based hacking simulation that begins when the player receives an automated message from a recently deceased hacker named Bit. His instructions suggest that his death was not as simple as it appears and provide access to a network of computers containing clues about his final activities.
The game presents hacking through a stylized command-line interface rather than conventional third-person action. Players learn commands, investigate files, break into networks, and gradually acquire software capable of bypassing more complicated security.
How the Gameplay Works
Players scan remote computers for open ports and run appropriate cracking programs before gaining administrator access. Once inside, files, logs, emails, and connected systems can provide clues or reveal another target.
Some systems trace the player’s connection, creating time pressure while security is being bypassed. Progress introduces additional hacking tools and increasingly complex networks, while missions can involve deleting files, recovering information, or uncovering hidden evidence.
