Metal Slug 2 is a fast-paced 2D run-and-gun action game that continues the fight against General Morden and his Rebel Army with new characters, vehicles, weapons, and enemy types. Marco Rossi and Tarma Roving return alongside newcomers Eri Kasamoto and Fio Germi, giving players four soldiers to choose from. The campaign moves through deserts, cities, underground ruins, and military-controlled areas while gradually introducing stranger threats beyond the usual enemy troops and machines.
The sequel keeps the arcade-style shooting of the original while adding more variety to both combat and level design. Players can rescue prisoners, collect stronger weapons, use temporary vehicles, and encounter unusual transformations that change how their character behaves. Military enemies remain a major threat, but later stages also introduce mummies, strange creatures, and alien forces, pushing the action into more unexpected territory.
How the Gameplay Works
Players move through side-scrolling stages while running, jumping, shooting, throwing grenades, and avoiding enemy fire. The standard handgun provides unlimited ammunition, while stronger weapons such as heavy machine guns, shotguns, rocket launchers, and flame-based weapons can be collected during missions. Prisoners hidden or captured throughout stages can be rescued and may reward players with ammunition, weapons, food, or additional score.
Several missions include vehicles that provide extra firepower and protection, including the classic Metal Slug tank, Camel Slug, and Slug Flyer. Certain hazards can also transform the player, with mummy and overweight forms changing movement and attacks until the effect is removed. Each mission ends with a large boss encounter, while two-player cooperative play allows both players to move through the same stage together and combine their attacks against larger enemy groups.
