Metro 2033 Redux is a post-apocalyptic first-person shooter set beneath the ruins of Moscow after a nuclear catastrophe has made much of the surface dangerous to human life. Survivors have formed small communities inside the city’s underground railway network, where individual stations have developed their own cultures, alliances, and conflicts while mutants roam the tunnels and devastated world above.
Players follow Artyom, a young survivor raised inside the Metro who leaves his home station after a new threat begins endangering the remaining population. The Redux edition rebuilds the original Metro 2033 using the improved 4A Engine and brings over refinements to movement, weapons, artificial intelligence, stealth, lighting, and other systems from Metro: Last Light.
How the Gameplay Works
Players travel through underground tunnels, occupied stations, abandoned facilities, and sections of the irradiated Moscow surface. Firearms can be purchased, exchanged, and modified, while ammunition, filters, medical supplies, and other resources must be carefully managed. Military-grade ammunition can also function as valuable currency, creating a choice between spending it or loading it into compatible weapons.
Surface exploration requires a gas mask with replaceable filters, while damage can crack or cover the mask and reduce visibility. Encounters can often be approached through stealth or direct combat, and the Redux edition provides Survival and Spartan play styles that shift the balance between resource management and action-focused gunplay. Ranger Mode is also available for a more demanding experience.
