Midnight Protocol is a tactical RPG and hacking game where players take the role of a hacker known as Data, whose identity has been exposed after a government crackdown. Rather than controlling a character through traditional movement, the entire game is operated through keyboard commands entered into a terminal-style interface. Missions involve breaking into digital networks, stealing information, uncovering secrets, and deciding how Data responds to the people and organizations connected to the wider conspiracy.
The game combines turn-based strategy with narrative choices, allowing players to develop Data as a more aggressive, cautious, or principled hacker depending on their decisions. Different programs can be installed and upgraded to create specialized hacking setups, while optional contracts provide additional opportunities to earn money, reputation, and useful software. Choices made during conversations and missions can also influence relationships and how parts of the story develop.
How the Gameplay Works
Players navigate computer networks by typing commands rather than using traditional point-and-click controls. Each network is represented as a collection of connected nodes containing security systems, files, programs, and objectives. Actions take place in turns, so moving between nodes, attacking security programs, downloading information, or activating software gives hostile systems an opportunity to respond.
Different hacking programs provide abilities for attacking defenses, hiding Data’s presence, collecting information, or manipulating parts of the network. Programs can be combined into custom loadouts before missions, allowing players to build strategies around stealth, direct attacks, or specialized utilities. Completing contracts earns credits that can be spent on new software and upgrades, while reputation with different groups can open additional opportunities and affect the choices available throughout the campaign.
