Mortal Shell is a dark action RPG set in a ruined world filled with hostile creatures, fallen warriors, and mysterious religious forces. Players control an unusual being known as the Foundling, who can inhabit the bodies of dead warriors called Shells. Each Shell functions like a different character class, offering its own balance of health, stamina, resolve, and combat abilities. The journey leads through the swamps and ruins of Fallgrim and into several dangerous temples where powerful enemies guard important objectives.
The game focuses on deliberate melee combat, exploration, and learning enemy behavior rather than fast button-mashing. Instead of collecting large amounts of traditional armor and equipment, players discover a smaller selection of Shells and weapons that can be upgraded and mastered over time. Its compact interconnected world, difficult encounters, hidden paths, and limited healing options encourage players to move carefully and become familiar with each area.
How the Gameplay Works
Players explore from a third-person perspective while fighting with swords, hammers, large blades, and other melee weapons. Attacks consume stamina, making it important to manage offensive moves, dodges, and positioning during combat. The Foundling’s signature Harden ability allows the body to temporarily turn to stone, blocking an incoming attack even while performing another action. Harden can be used defensively, during attack animations, or to interrupt an enemy’s momentum before counterattacking.
Different Shells provide different combat strengths and can be upgraded by spending Tar and Glimpses collected throughout the world. Weapons also have their own upgrades and special abilities that consume Resolve. If a Shell is defeated, the Foundling can be knocked out of the body and given a chance to reclaim it before dying completely. Players can also parry selected attacks and use empowered ripostes for effects such as restoring health or dealing additional damage, while major areas end in challenging boss encounters.
