About This Game:
Nidhogg is a minimalist competitive fencing game where two opponents fight for the right to run toward opposite ends of a long connected arena. Unlike a traditional fighting game, eliminating the opponent does not end the round. The defeated fighter quickly respawns and can attempt to stop the advancing player further along the route.
This creates a constant tug-of-war where the direction of progress can change after almost every duel. Simple visuals keep attention on positioning and movement, while the limited moveset becomes increasingly strategic when both players understand how to counter one another.
How the Gameplay Works
Players use fencing attacks at different heights while moving forward, retreating, jumping, rolling, and attempting to pass their opponent. Sword attacks can be parried, and a lost weapon does not necessarily end the fight because characters can continue using close-range attacks.
Defeating the rival gives the winner permission to run toward their side’s exit. The other player respawns ahead and tries to regain control by winning another duel. A match ends only when one fighter successfully reaches the final area and is sacrificed to the Nidhogg.
