Police Stories is a top-down tactical action game where players control police officers John Rimes and Rick Jones during dangerous operations involving armed suspects, hostages, criminal hideouts, and bomb threats. Unlike a traditional shooter where eliminating every enemy is enough, missions reward proper police procedure and encourage players to arrest suspects whenever the situation allows instead of automatically using lethal force.
Levels contain randomized suspect, hostage, and evidence placement, so memorizing one perfect route does not guarantee success on the next attempt. Limited visibility hides rooms until officers can actually see inside, while suspects may surrender, attack suddenly, flee, or react unpredictably. Single-player gives direct control of Rimes while Jones follows commands, and cooperative play lets two players control the officers together.
How the Gameplay Works
Players enter buildings from an overhead perspective and carefully clear rooms while identifying civilians and armed suspects. Commands allow the AI partner to breach doors, cover positions, arrest people, hold ground, or follow the player. Equipment can be chosen before missions, including firearms, flashbangs, medical supplies, ballistic shields, lock picks, and tools that help inspect dangerous rooms.
Suspects can be ordered to surrender and may be subdued with warning shots, melee strikes, pepper spray, tasers, or other less-lethal options. Lethal weapons should generally be used only when someone presents an immediate threat. Players gain points for arrests, evidence collection, and proper procedure while losing points for excessive force, injured civilians, or missed objectives.
