Radio Commander is a military strategy game set during the Vietnam War where players command troops without receiving a traditional real-time view of the battlefield. Instead, the commander remains at headquarters with a map and a radio, relying on reports from soldiers in the field to understand what is happening.
The unusual perspective places communication and uncertainty at the center of the experience. Units may encounter enemies, become lost, request artillery support, report casualties, or provide incomplete information. The commander must interpret those reports and update the tactical map manually while operations continue beyond direct sight.
How the Gameplay Works
Players communicate with squads through radio commands and order them to move, patrol, attack, retreat, defend positions, or request support. Because the map does not automatically reveal the exact location of every friendly or hostile unit, information provided over the radio must be carefully followed and converted into tactical decisions.
Artillery, helicopters, reconnaissance, medical evacuation, and other assets can assist ground forces when used at the correct moment. Campaign decisions and battlefield outcomes influence the continuing story, while soldiers can gain experience and develop individual characteristics as they survive additional operations.
