Red Faction II moves the series away from Mars and into a twenty-second-century Earth ruled by the dictator Sopot. Players control Alias, a demolitions specialist who joins a squad of enhanced soldiers fighting against the Commonwealth government after its leadership turns against them.
Alias works alongside five specialists with different combat roles, and the campaign places the squad in cities, military facilities, industrial locations, and other heavily defended areas. The sequel increases the amount of straightforward action while continuing to include environmental destruction and powerful explosives.
How the Gameplay Works
The game plays as a first-person shooter built around quick firefights using assault rifles, shotguns, explosives, heavy weapons, and other specialized equipment. Certain walls and environmental objects can be destroyed, allowing some encounters to be approached by blasting through obstacles instead of always using normal routes.
Several missions introduce vehicles and mounted weapons, while squad members appear throughout the campaign to support Alias during larger battles. Player behavior also contributes to a heroism system that can influence how the story concludes.
